A BRIEF HISTORY

Beaker & Wrench

Beaker & Wrench was founded by a chemist and a mechanical engineer who share a love for science.

2016

Vanessa worked in the first state-licensed cannabis manufacturing lab in Berkeley, CA where she met Ace who helped her with a clogging issue on her machinery. Ace prototyped and fabricated the first peristaltic pump for Vanessa's wiped-film evaporator.

2017

While Ace and Vanessa worked full-time, they sold the wiped-film pumps to other labs as a side-business. They named it “Beaker & Wrench” to celebrate their respective talents and interests. At the time, they operated out of their guest bedroom in Oakland, CA and TechShop in San Francisco, CA.

2018

Ace and Vanessa moved to Los Angeles, CA to work as full-time consultants in a cannabis lab, where they continued to innovate their small product line. Upon receiving a larger than expected shipment of stainless steel to their Santa Monica apartment in April of 2018, they found they can no longer do business out of their home.

They expanded to a 900 sq. ft. warehouse in Los Angeles, CA, where they transitioned Beaker & Wrench to a full-time business alongside 2 employees.

2019

In January 2019, Beaker & Wrench moved to a 3200 sq. ft. warehouse where they transitioned from retrofitting their gear and peristaltic pumps to other machinery. Beaker & Wrench launched their first in-house designed wiped-film evaporator.

2020

The 6” wiped-film evaporator became their flagship product, while the new design for the 12” wiped-film evaporator commenced. Despite COVID-19 devastating the supply chain, the team expanded to 10 employees, continued to get shipments delivered on time, and had a profitable year. Beaker & Wrench hired their first CFO.

2021

Due to growing demand, the team moved into a 12,500 sq. ft. facility in Commerce, CA and continued to expand. With a strong engineering foundation, new opportunities were pursued to keep pushing the limits of oil refinement equipment.

2023

A major milestone was reached with UL508A certification, helping ensure safer electrical panels for operators and reducing the risk of hazards such as electric shock, arc flash, and fire.

2024

The product catalog expanded with the release of the first 200L decarb, along with the launch of the BW-SR50 Automated Solvent Recovery System. The team also earned CE certification, supporting continued growth into global markets.

2025

Expansion into the hop oil industry marked a new chapter, along with the achievement of ISO 9001 certification—the international gold standard for quality management systems. This reflects a deep commitment to continuous improvement, consistency, and customer satisfaction.
