In my ten years in the distillation industry, I've seen a lot of mistakes. Most of them come down to the same root cause: labs make equipment decisions before they really understand what their process needs. That one misstep sets off a chain of expensive fixes down the line. I've summed up the top five most expensive mistakes you should avoid.

1. Buying Chinese Equipment

It might be tempting to buy Chinese equipment, but I highly suggest against going "cheap." You'll be dealing with downtime and setup delays in a volatile market — and I guarantee you can't afford it.

2. German Systems

German systems are overpriced compared to American systems. Look for efficient alternatives that are reasonably priced with good lead times.

3. Not Properly Process Planning

I can't stress this enough: process planning is everything. If you don't properly plan the systems your lab needs, you'll be pouring money down the drain. It's what tells you the actual size of equipment you need. Don't purchase based on assumptions — take the time to really understand your goal for the process.

4. Hiring Bad Consultants

There are good consultants out there. But I've seen labs more misdirected than properly guided by "consultants." Vet your consultants carefully. This goes back to number three: by properly planning your process, you can present that plan to the consultant. If they know what they're doing, they'll follow your plan and guide you correctly. If not, that's not the consultant for you.
